Rahu and Ketu: The Shadow Planets of Vedic Astrology

20 Apr 202510 min read

Rahu and Ketu are among the most fascinating — and frequently misunderstood — elements of Vedic astrology. Unlike the other seven classical planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn), Rahu and Ketu have no physical mass. They are the two points where the Moon's orbital path intersects the ecliptic (the apparent path of the Sun) — known in Western astronomy as the North Node and South Node of the Moon respectively.

The Mythology of Rahu and Ketu

Vedic mythology explains Rahu and Ketu through the story of the demon Svarbhanu. During the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan), the gods and demons produced Amrita — the nectar of immortality. Svarbhanu disguised himself as a god and consumed some Amrita. The Sun and Moon recognised him and alerted Vishnu, who immediately severed his head with the Sudarshana Chakra. But having already consumed Amrita, Svarbhanu could not die. His head became Rahu (the North Node) and his tail became Ketu (the South Node). This is why Rahu and Ketu are said to "swallow" the Sun and Moon, causing solar and lunar eclipses.

What Rahu Represents

Rahu (North Node) represents obsessive desire, material ambition, illusion, foreign matters, technology, unconventional paths, and sudden events. It is like an amplifier — whatever house and sign Rahu occupies, it intensifies the themes of that area. Rahu is associated with worldly success, especially in the areas of politics, media, IT, and foreign trade. It rules the Vimshottari Dasha for 18 years — the longest single planetary period.

What Ketu Represents

Ketu (South Node) is diametrically opposite — representing spirituality, detachment, liberation (Moksha), past-life karma, and the occult. Where Rahu grasps and desires, Ketu releases and transcends. Ketu's influence often brings a sense of incompleteness or dissatisfaction with the matters of its house, pushing the soul toward spiritual growth. Ketu rules a 7-year Dasha period.

Rahu-Ketu Transit and Its Effects

Rahu and Ketu transit through the zodiac in retrograde motion (opposite to the other planets), spending approximately 18 months in each sign. Their axis shifts every 1.5 years, creating what Vedic astrologers call a Nodal Axis Shift — a period of significant collective change affecting the themes of the two signs they enter. The Rahu-Ketu axis is considered one of the most powerful indicators of karmic themes in any given period.
