Moon Sign vs Sun Sign: Why Vedic Astrology Uses Rashi
If you have ever compared your Vedic horoscope to a Western one, you may have noticed that your zodiac sign is different. This is not an error — it reflects a fundamental difference in how the two systems work.
The Sidereal vs Tropical Zodiac
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the seasons. Aries always begins at the March equinox, regardless of where the actual Aries constellation is in the sky. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the actual visible stars. Due to a phenomenon called the precession of the equinoxes, the two zodiacs have drifted approximately 23–24° apart over the centuries. This is called the Ayanamsa.
The practical result: if you are born in mid-April, Western astrology calls you an Aries Sun. But the Sun was actually in the sidereal Pisces constellation at that time. Vedic astrology would call your Sun sign Meen (Pisces).
Why the Moon Matters More in Vedic Astrology
In Vedic astrology, your Rashi refers to your Moon sign — the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at your exact moment of birth. This is the primary sign used for daily, monthly, and annual predictions (Rashifal).
The reason is deeply logical: the Sun spends approximately one month in each sign, meaning everyone born in the same month shares a Sun sign. The Moon, however, changes signs every 2.25 days — making it a far more personalised indicator. Your Moon sign reflects your mind, emotions, habitual reactions, and the subconscious patterns that shape your daily experience.
The Role of the Lagna (Ascendant)
Beyond the Moon sign, Vedic astrology places equal importance on the Lagna (rising sign) — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth moment. The Lagna changes every two hours, making it the most personal indicator of all. A full Kundli (birth chart) analysis considers the Lagna, Moon sign, and Sun sign together for a complete picture.
How to Find Your Rashi
To find your Vedic Moon sign (Rashi), you need your date, time, and place of birth. The Moon's position is then calculated using the sidereal system. OnlyMantra's free analysis tool computes your Rashi, Lagna, and Nakshatra instantly when you enter your birth details.
